The 1990s will forever be remembered as the era when R&B music took center stage in popular culture. With the likes of TLC, Boyz II Men, and several other groups dominating the charts, this pivotal period witnessed a resurgence of R&B to become the genre that fueled music sales and reaped acclaim. This phenomenon dubbed “The 90’s R&B Renaissance” was characterized by innovative vocals, energetic performances, and boundary-breaking fusions of various R&B styles. Let us explore the key factors and outstanding examples that led to the reign of harmony groups like Boyz II Men, TLC, and others in this glorious age.

A Growing Divide in the Music Industry

Before the 90’s R&B renaissance, the music landscape had developed significant divergences between multiple styles. The late 80s brought alternative rock and grunge movement in the forefront, overshadowing their previous R&B contemporaries like Prince, Whitney Houston, or Chaka Khan. In this situation, talented R&B groups faced either silence or relegated roles of ‘background noise’. Little could they have known, though, their moment would come and strike loud.

“What’s Missing from Here…?”

1990 saw Boyz II Men release their debut album Born to Sing: N-Joint, the lead-off single "It’s So Hard to Say Goodbye" – a heartfelt ballad crafted during their days in various group configurations. Their innovative technique featured harmonies from group’s lead vocalist Wanya Morrris, and group harmony created memorable melodies. With time proved "It’s So Hard," Boz II Men captured chart popularity, paving the way for this future with their first successful number hit "End of the Road in 1992, it helped them reach unparalleled music world heights. <p/size>
