Iron Maiden Drummer Nicko McBrain Opens Up About His Stroke and Limitations

Iron Maiden drummer Nicko McBrain has been open about his struggles since suffering a stroke in January 2023. The stroke left him partially paralyzed, but after months of intensive physical therapy, he made a remarkable recovery. In a recent show with his side-project Titanium Tarts, McBrain discussed his experience and how it has affected his performance.

The New Rule

McBrain, now 72, explained that the band has instituted a new rule to accommodate his limitations. "If you can’t do something in a song, we just won’t do that song," he said. This means that some songs, like "Caught Somewhere In Time" from the 1986 album Somewhere in Time, have been modified to fit McBrain’s new abilities.

The Inspiration of Steve Harris

McBrain cited an example of how bassist and primary songwriter Steve Harris helped him adapt to his new limitations. The song "Caught Somewhere In Time" features a middle section with a snare drum fill that McBrain can no longer play. Harris came up with a solution, suggesting that McBrain play the fill on the cymbal instead. When that didn’t work, Harris proposed playing the fill straight, which McBrain agreed was a genius idea.

The Power of Teamwork

McBrain emphasized the importance of teamwork within the band, saying, "My band, bless their hearts, Steve and the rest of the guys turn around and say, ‘If you can’t do something in a song, we just won’t do that song.’" This collaborative approach has allowed the band to continue performing and creating music despite McBrain’s limitations.

The Journey to Recovery

McBrain discussed his journey to recovery, saying, "I couldn’t play; I was paralyzed on the right side. Fortunately… there’s a girl called Julie Blum that looked after me, and in three months, she had me playing again." He admitted that he’s not the same drummer he used to be, saying, "It ain’t the old Nicko – it’s not the old one by a long shot. But at least it’s part of me."

Conclusion

Nicko McBrain’s openness about his stroke and limitations is a testament to his resilience and determination. The band’s willingness to adapt and find solutions has allowed them to continue making music and performing. As McBrain said, "At least it’s part of me," and it’s clear that he’s grateful to be back behind the drums, even if it’s not exactly the same as before.
