Cameron Crowe’s Cult Classic "Tom Petty: Heartbreakers Beach Party" Returns to Theaters
Cameron Crowe’s directorial debut, 1983’s iconic rock ‘n’ roll documentary "Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers Heartbreakers Beach Party" is set to hit the big screen this fall in theaters across the nation.
Originally released in 1983, the documentary provides a unique glimpse into Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers’ world during that time. The documentary offers candid interviews, electrifying live performances, and access to the band, delving into their musical craftsmanship. The film showcases Tommy’s camaraderie and antics with his band members Mike Campbell, Benmont Tench, Stan Lynch, and others. Unfortunately, the documentary initially went to air only once in the early hours of October 1983, earning its notorious reputation as one the MTV’s most iconic curtailed broadcasts.
"This has been a personal as well as professional restoration quest of mine," explained film co-director, Jim Avati. "Through perseverance and dedication, alongside co-authors Adria Petty and the Petty Estate team, we’ve lovingly unearthed the once-cancelled footage from multiple tape sources, culminator in a remarkable blend of vintage and enhanced cinematography."
